Marlborough Sounds/ Nelson Lakes

Nelson and Marlborough are stunningly peaceful regions located on the sheltered northern coastline of the south island of NZ. Cycle for six days, East to West along the fiords of the Marlborough sounds, over the Nelson ranges and into the tranquil oasis of the Abel Tasman.

Day 1: Christchurch to Picton

Christchurch to Picton – Take the Tranz Alpine train, a scenic feast, with the Kaikoura mountain ranges on one side of your train and the rugged Pacific Ocean coastline on the other.

Day 2: Picton to Kenepuru Sound

Distance:  49km Altitude gain: +610 m
Picton to Kenepuru Sound – Shadow the inlets of the Marlborough Sounds as you ride on peaceful back roads to your luxury accommodation located on the inlet of Kenepuru Sound.

Day 3: Kenepuru Sound to Blenheim wine region

Distance: 76 km Altitude gain: +707 m
Kenepuru Sound to Blenheim wine region – Kenepuru Sound to Blenheim wine region – Cycle back along Kenepuru sound to the green lipped mussel capital of NZ. Then descend into the Blenheim wine region and stop at the various award winning wineries for free tastings.pleasant 30km ride brings us to Franz Josef and a chance for a coffee stop before heading over the hills to Fox Glacier.

Day 4: Blenheim wine region to St Arnaud

Distance:  89km Altitude gain: +716 m
Blenheim wine region to St Arnaud – Blenheim wine region to St Arnaud – Cycle through mountaineous valleys to the small alpine village of St Arnaud. Take in the majestic view of lake Rotoiti and enjoy the many comforts of this charming town.

Day 5: St Arnaud to Nelson

Distance:  79km Altitude gain: +536 m
St Arnaud to Nelson – A scenic journey through rolling hills and farmland to the sunshine city of Nelson.

Day 6: Nelson to Kaiteriteri

Distance:  77km Altitude gain: +400 m
Nelson to Kaiteriteri – A stunning countryside and endless fruit orchards culminating alongside the turquoise waters and golden sands of the Abel Tasman national park.

Day 7: Kaiteriteri to Takaka

Distance:  67 km Altitude gain: +1113 m
Kaiteriteri to Takaka – Panoramic views, rainforest and a challenging ascent over the Takaka hills to the village of Pohara in Golden Bay.

Day 8: Takaka to Nelson

Takaka to Nelson – Transfer back to Nelson for the end of your journey.
